Materials Science and Engineering

Goals and objectives:

Our goal is to cultivate students with right outlook on life, value and ambition, with well-grounded knowledge of this major, theory and technology and management awareness. To train qualified students with good interpersonal communication, communication and cooperation, organization and management capabilities, thus they can use these concepts, knowledge and abilities to solve various problems in the field of science and technology, society, environment and development in the future.

Requirements:Our undergraduates should master the following knowledge and increase capacity:

1.Engineering knowledge:Apply mathematics, natural science, engineering fundamentals and professional knowledge respectively to solve the complex materials science and engineering problems.

2.Problem analysis:Apply the rational of mathematics, natural science, engineering fundamentals and materials science toidentify, describe and analyse complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions through academic literature research.

3.Design/Solutions:Be able toperform full-cycle, full-flow design of new materials, new component preparations, or to solve complex material engineering problems through technological process and solution based on improved material properties or material protection, and to reveal the innovation awareness concerning the problems of society health, security, law, culture, environment and so on.

4.Investigation:Conduct investigations of complex problems using fundamental knowledge of material science and research methods including design of experiments, analysis and interpretation of data, and synthesis of information to provide valid conclusions.

5.Modern tool usage:Be able to use and develop the related techniques, resources and procedure, simulation software, analyzing and detecting tools, engineering tools and IT tools regarding to the complex material science and engineering problems, and understand the limits.

6.The engineeringand society: Apply reasoning informed by materials knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and the consequent responsibilities relevant to material engineering practice and solutions to complex engineering problems.

7.Environment and sustainability:Understand and evaluate the sustainability and impact of engineering work in the solution of complex material engineeringproblems in societal and environmental contexts.

8.Ethics:Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of materials engineering practice.

9.Individual and teamwork:Commit to teamwork spirit and individual responsibility, and play as a member or leader in multi-disciplinary team.

10.Communication:Communicate effectively on relevant complex problems to the engineering community and society at large, such as reports and writing design, make effective and clear respondent or instructions. Start from the international context and communicate and exchange in the cross-culture context.

11.Project management:Understand and master the material engineering management principles and economic decision-making ways and apply these to the work in multi-disciplinary environments.

12.Life-long learning:Raisethe awareness of self-learning and life-long learning, strengthen the ability to adapt the changing environment.

Major advantages:The major of Materials Science and Engineering originated from the Institute of Marine machinery repairing & Metal manufacturing of DMU founded in the early 1980s.Theundergraduates enrollment, at present, aredivided into three classes about 90 students, including one class as High Polymer Material.

There are 30 full-time theory teachers, 4 experiment teachers, including 6 doctoral supervisors, 14 professors, 9 associate professors and 7 lecturers, 1 senior engineer, 3 engineers, 29 of them have the doctor’s degree.

Through the four-year study, students will have a good basic knowledge on the modern materials science, and the underlying correlations between materials composition, structure, performance and processing technology. The students are not only qualified for the traditional manufacturing industry including material design and production, material detection and surface enhancement, material manufacture and welding technology etc., also the R&D engineers for the new functional materials industry.

The Materials Science and Engineering Major of DMU is the supporting institution for the Marine Machinery Repair and Manufacture Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Transportation. There are master programs: Materials Science and Engineering and the Transportation Engineering; doctoral program: the Vehicle Operation Engineering to guarantee the broad developing opportunity for the undergraduates in pursuing further education. Each year about 33%undergraduates will go for the postgraduate education not only in our department but also in other high reputation universities. For the research and teaching facilities, our lab is equipped with more than 20 large scale laboratory instruments and various small scale teaching equipment, and funded with sufficient teaching and practicing fee. The students can accomplish the theoretical courses, meanwhile many opportunities can be created for the students to build their comprehensive abilities in solving the complex engineering problems.

Majorcourses:Physical Chemistry, Fundamentals of Materials Science, Mechanics of Materials, Solid-state Phase Changes & Metal Heat Treatment, Mechanical Properties of Materials, Physical Properties of Materials, Examination and Analysis Methods of Materials, Metal Material Science, Inorganic Non-metallic Materials, The Conspectus of Polymer Materials, Application of Computer Technology in Materials Science, Fundamental of Machine Design, Basics of Computer Programming.

Prospectiveemployment:Based on the Employment statistics from 2015~2017, a part of the graduates with bachelor degree of Materials Science and Engineering continued studying for the postgraduate degree. Other graduates entered the traditional manufacturing enterprise in the field of transportation including BYD Auto, Beiqi Foton and Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Co etc. Still others are engaged in the R&D, testing, or production management positions in the emerging industries such as Intel Inc (Da Lian) and BOE Technology Group Co., Ltd as well as TianjinShenhua etc
